Sustainable Development Goals

Posted on 27/09/2018

At the end of last year, the SJL Oxfam Youth Action Group embarked on a collaboration with the Roundwood Park Youth Action Group surrounding the Sustainable Development Goals. These goals encompass economic growth, social inclusion, environmental protection and the promotion of physical and mental well-being for all.

We set out on one of our most creative campaigns yet, aiming to educate the students of our school about this global initiative and how it relates to everyday things that happen around the world. Our group created a model sustainable city out of recycled materials that was the ‘perfect’ place to live -  for example, by having clean oceans, good systems of government, thriving businesses and infrastructure as well as quality education and healthcare.

The Roundwood Park group, on the other hand, were tasked with creating an unsustainable city that neglected the goals – for example, by having a polluted ocean and atmosphere, having huge transnational companies dominating business, as well as poor quality education and healthcare.

One lunchtime we showcased them both side to side and posed the question – ‘Where would you rather live?’ Unsurprisingly, it was obvious that most people would want to live in the sustainable future, and we then asked passing-by students to quickly pledge how they could make a more sustainable future.
