Refugee Project
Posted on 13/12/2023In the summer term we had two asylum seekers, Waleed and Jihad, visit the school and share their stories with Sixth Form students. The students who attended the talk were so moved that they wanted to do something to make a difference, so they ran a donation drive to support asylum seekers staying locally. These donations were taken over and delivered personally through a café run by STEP.
" In November we had the opportunity to visit Markyate Baptist Church in order to give the donations, provided by SJL students and staff, to the organisers of the café for asylum seekers. We were able to witness the incredible work and effort the volunteers put into helping those less fortunate than ourselves, as well as having our own opportunity to get involved.
From organising clothes to helping the men pick out appropriate items for the upcoming winter, we experienced first-hand the influence the act of giving truly has. We are very thankful we were able to help in such an active way - this wouldn’t have been possible without the copious donations made by the Sir John Lawes community, so thank you to everyone who kindly donated."
