Media Studies Higher Project
An exciting opportunity has arisen for MASt students to extend themselves with this stretch and challenge activity: Level 2 Extended Project
The Level 2 Extended Project is a certified subject awarded by Pearson Exam board and it equates to half a GCSE with students achieving grades A* to C.
This is aimed at independent, academic students with enquiring minds who wish to pursue their own topic area of interest. The Level 2 Extended Project is a qualification that gives students the chance to explore a topic that interests them, in a way that develops their skills in research, planning, writing and presentation.
What you will do:
Students start by picking a topic they’re curious about, then research it in-depth. Previous topic areas investigated by students have included:
- Are athletes born or made?
- What can we learn from Victorian medicine?
- Can the NHS be saved?
- Is horse racing cruel?
- What can be done to mitigate Cyber threats?
- Does childhood trauma always impact adults?
- Who decides what Art is worth?
- Why do we procrastinate?
- What was the greatest dinosaur?
- Will television still exist in 20 years?
The project helps students improve key transferable skills such as researching, problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, and communication. Along the way, they’ll work on creating a project plan, gathering evidence, and presenting their findings in a structured way. This supports other subjects and prepares students well for the Extended Project Level 3 that our most able students study alongside their A levels.
How you will be assessed:
The final assessment includes a written report and a presentation, where students explain their process, results, and the conclusions they’ve drawn.
It’s a great way to show off student creativity and research skills, and it can help with future studies or career choices. Plus, it’s an excellent way to demonstrate their ability to work independently, a skill that’s highly valued in both education and the workplace.
If your child is interested, they need to select this choice when they make their Year 8 options. Mrs Kench, Head of Media, will be at the Year 8 Options Evening and can answer any questions you may have.
